ExpertView EP15: small schemes and risk transfer

ExpertView is our series of discussions bringing together experts from different disciplines to share their specialist perspectives on key pension topics.

In our latest episode, Trustee Director James Chalk hosts the panel, and is joined by Iain Church from Hymans Robertson, and Nick Flynn from Canada Life. In the discussion, James investigates several areas, including:

  • how processes for quoting and contracting a whole scheme buy-in, differ for small schemes
  • the things schemes should consider when choosing an insurer to work with exclusively
  • what insurers are looking for when approaching a small scheme transaction
  • the trends our guests are anticipating in the next 12-24 months

Looking back at the episode, host James Chalk reflected: “It is more difficult than ever for small (sub £100m) schemes to gain traction with insurers in what is an extremely busy risk transfer market. Those schemes that are well prepared are best placed to transact with an insurer, but may need to be flexible in their approach and timetable to maximise their chances of success.”
